One of the questions I hear most often is how to layer necklaces in a way that feels balanced and not overcrowded, especially when you’re trying to add something new but don’t know where to start. In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly how I build a necklace stack using pieces you already own, from using your everyday gold chains as a base to adding a thin gemstone strand and bringing in larger pieces without everything feeling crowded.

Start with the necklaces you already wear every day. Measure them end to end, including the clasp, so you know your exact starting point. Most people have one or two gold chains that sit around 15.5 to 16 inches, and those become the foundation of your stack.
A thin gemstone strand is the easiest way to add something new without overwhelming your look. The key is spacing. If your base necklaces are close in length, go slightly shorter or longer by about a quarter inch so everything layers cleanly instead of sitting on top of each other.
This is where the stack starts to feel intentional. Larger gemstones add contrast and balance, but they also sit higher on the neck because of their size. Giving yourself about two inches of space keeps everything from feeling crowded and lets each layer stand out.

A longer necklace brings everything together. This is also where you can add a charm. I love attaching it right to the clasp so it feels integrated into the piece. The extra length gives movement and makes the whole stack feel complete.

When it all comes together, the goal is simple: layered, balanced, and easy. Nothing should feel forced. You should be able to take pieces on and off and still have it work.
Once you understand the spacing and balance, building your own stack becomes second nature!
